If it looks like BS and smells like BS, it probably is BS

I was struck this week by the absurdity of government as we've come to know it. Don't worry, I'm not a Democrat or a Republican here to tell you how the other side is messing things up or an anarchist or conspiracy theorist whining about how "they" are plotting to take our rights and our stuff. I'm just a guy who's been around long enough to know bullshit when I see it.

The news is abuzz about the Secretary of Defense scored a major political victory by pulling the plug on the F-22 program. It's freakin' ridiculous that it's noteworthy that the Pentagon actually chose to ask Congress to stop funding an overpriced weapons system that never worked as advertised and has no apparent mission except to look really cool at air shows and create jobs in key Congressional districts. It's even more ridiculous that Congress put up a fight about it.

It makes perfect sense to me that a defense contractor would try to sell the government a sexy airplane with all kinds of cool systems that, on the rare occasion when they actually work, cost over 40 thousand dollars an hour to fly. What doesn't make sense is why the government would buy it. Hell, I saw a really cool BMW today with a high tech V-12 and all kinds of neat electronics on the dash....but I didn't buy it because I didn't need it and couldn't afford it.

To be perfectly honest, I might have bought the BMW anyway because I'm a guy and this thing was really cool, but I didn't because I knew that if I paid too much for a car that I didn't need and couldn't afford, my wife would have my ass.

Am I missing something or should this whole thing have been that simple all along? I've watched as both political parties have spent money we don't have on stuff we don't need to create jobs, influence voters and, in the words of the great Mel Brooks, to protect their phony baloney jobs.

Politicians, lobbyists and talking heads tell us that it's not simple. They say it's complicated, they say there's more to it. I admit that I'm no political scientist and I'm sure as hell no constitutional lawyer, but I can read and I have a copy of the US Constitution and I say, "BULLSHIT!"

Only Congress can spend our money and only the president can approve the budget. Really, I read the whole Constitution (it's not that hard, you should take a look) and there's no mention of bureaucrats, lobbyists, the ACLU, the NRA or Rush Limbaugh anywhere in there. It turns out that the Constitution says that only elected officials have the power to spend our money and ordinary voters like you and me are their wives.....that is to say that, if they buy stuff we don't need and can't afford, we can have their asses.

It really is that simple. All of the rest of the it is just made up bullshit. It's absolutely absurd that these clowns are patting themselves on the back for taking the BMW back after making two thirds of the payments. What would be more absurd would be us letting them get away with it.

El Guapo has spoken.

  1. Again, you are right on the money. It is unfortunate that we have elected self-serving politicians and not statesmen.
My friend, you preach common sense - something that is too often ignored by 'politicians'.
